Sofia Entrance Exam: What Is Published

Drawing of two cards for the Sofia entrance exam: what is published, and what is not

In short. Medical University Sofia's admissions page has no sample paper for its entrance exam in English.

  • Sofia sends preparation materials after you register.
  • It does not publish the number of questions, the time or the question types.
  • Below: what Sofia does publish, and how to prepare now. These are the 2026/27 rules.

Medical University Sofia is not Sofia University. They are two different universities. This guide covers Medical University Sofia only.

What Sofia publishes

Medical University Sofia, 2026/27. Published: three parts online, a score out of 42 and one 2026 date per group. Also fees of €55 and €210, and a training manual. Fail one part and you fail. Results are final. Not published: the number of questions, the time and the question types. Also not published: a sample paper on its admissions page, a target score or a minimum school grade.

The chart shows what Sofia's admissions page says for 2026/27. Two points need a few more words:

  • The training manual costs €15.34. The page does not say what is in it, so ask before you buy it.
  • Results are final. Sofia says it does not re-mark the papers.

What is not published, and why paid papers cannot be checked

Some websites describe the Sofia paper with exact question counts. Sofia's own page gives none. So there is nothing official to check them against.

Before you pay for any paper, ask the seller where it comes from. The safest source is Sofia itself. Its materials come after you register.

Sofia's page also states no minimum school grade. Ask Sofia before you apply.

Practise recalling answers, not just spotting them

The question types are not published. So prepare for more than multiple choice.

Sofia's grading rules for its June 2026 exam in Bulgarian include short written answers. That is a different exam, for the course taught in Bulgarian. Sofia does not say if the English exam has them too.

So train yourself to recall, not only to recognise:

  1. Hide the options. Read the question and write your answer in a few words. Then look at the options.
  2. Explain a process. Pick one, such as how an enzyme works. Explain it in two or three sentences, without notes.
  3. Draw from memory. Draw the heart, a cell or a neuron. Then label every part.
  4. Write out chemistry steps. Sofia does not say how much calculation there is. So solve problems on paper, one step per line.
  5. Mix it up. Do quick multiple-choice questions on some days, and longer written answers on others.

Start with school biology and chemistry. Then use Sofia's own materials when they arrive.

English: the part everyone can fail

Everyone takes the English part. Sofia's page names no certificate that lets you skip it.

  • It counts once in your score. The top mark is 6, so English gives at most 6 of the 42 points.
  • If you fail it, you fail the whole exam.
  • Its format is not published either.

So do not leave English to the last week. Read science texts in English often. Practise grammar and vocabulary too. Our practice does not cover English. Our live course goes through the English part. Or use a general English course for this part.

Your 2026 plan: documents in person, then one exam

For your diploma, Sofia asks for:

  • A legalised copy. Legalised means officially stamped as real.
  • A certified Bulgarian translation of it.
  • A NACID certificate. NACID is the Bulgarian office that checks foreign diplomas.

Hand them in by 31 August (2026), yourself or through someone you authorise. Post, fax and email are not accepted.

From outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland? Sofia's visa notice lists six files:

  1. The registration form, with your own email address on it
  2. Your high-school diploma
  3. The NACID certificate
  4. A document showing you may go on to higher education
  5. Your passport
  6. A photo, as a JPG

Bring each one on paper and on a USB stick, scanned as a separate PDF. You also need a type-D visa (a long-stay study visa). What item 4 means for your country is not stated: ask Sofia.

From the UK? You most likely take the non-EU date. Confirm with Sofia.

The 2027 dates are not published yet. For 2026, Sofia's page listed one exam date per group, in early to mid September.

For parents: one try cost €265 in 2026/27, that is €55 plus €210. Sofia listed one date per group for 2026 and states no retake rule, so plan for one try. A year of medicine costs €9,950 (2026/27). Dentistry costs €10,000 and pharmacy €8,000.

Checked against Medical University Sofia's admissions page on 27 August and 5 September 2026. Its June 2026 grading rules for the exam in Bulgarian were read on 5 September 2026. Its Visa D notice was read on 5 October 2026. That notice prints its end date as 31.09.2026, a date that does not exist, so we give the admissions page's 31 August.
