Biology · meiosis
Our sampleIn which phase of meiosis do the two chromosomes of each pair move to opposite ends of the cell?
Tap an answer to see the explanation.
Show the answerThe answer
The answer is B: Anaphase I.
- A) Wrong. Here the pairs lie side by side and swap pieces (crossing over). They do not move apart yet.
- B) Right. Each pair splits up here. One chromosome of each pair goes to each end, so each new cell gets one of each pair.
- C) Wrong. Here the two sister chromatids of each chromosome separate, as in mitosis. The pairs split earlier.
- D) Wrong. Here the chromosomes line up in the middle of each of the two cells. Nothing moves apart yet.
Meiosis is on Plovdiv's biology topic list.
Meiosis I splits the pairs of chromosomes. Meiosis II splits the sister chromatids, like mitosis.

Your Plovdiv questions, answered
When is the exam? Can I sit it before my school results?
Not published yet. Last year (2026): Five exam dates: 15 April, 15 May, 16 June, 17 July and 18 August 2026. A re-sit date followed on 4 September 2026. Registration closed about 7 days before each date.
Still at school? An early Plovdiv date only helps if Plovdiv confirms you can take the exam before your results and send your diploma later. Its 2026 guide has no rule on this. Ask first: question 4 of the email we wrote for you.
More on the dates and rankings: how the score and ranking work.
What was last year's cut-off? Is the April cut-off lower than June or July?
Plovdiv's admission guide gives no cut-off for the English programme. Cut-offs quoted on other websites and forums are not official. Check the Rankings pages on Plovdiv's own site, or ask Plovdiv. Nothing official says an early date is easier.
What Plovdiv does publish: Biology and Chemistry marks count three times, the English mark once. The maximum score is 42.00 and the minimum is 21.00. A missing mark, or any mark below 3.00, takes you out of the ranking. If you skip the English test with a certificate, the guide does not say what English mark you get: ask the university. Applicants are ranked by score, in the order of the programmes they chose. If several applicants have the same score at the cut-off, all of them are admitted.
I got 3 chemistry questions wrong but all of biology right. Am I out?
Biology and Chemistry marks count three times, the English mark once.
Our arithmetic on the weights: chemistry counts three times, so each 0.1 less in your chemistry mark costs 0.3 points. Plovdiv does not publish how points become a mark, so nobody outside Plovdiv knows your exact mark.
If I re-sit, which score counts?
You may sit more than one exam date in a year (see who can apply). Each date is paid for: EUR 300 per exam date: EUR 30 for data processing and EUR 270 for the tests. The September re-sit date costs EUR 400. Pay online by card only. If you cancel during the registration period, the EUR 270 for the tests can be refunded. The EUR 30 is not refunded. On admission you pay EUR 2,000. It counts toward first-semester tuition, and you do not get it back if you quit.
The guide does not say which result counts, or whether first-time applicants may book the September re-sit date. So ask Plovdiv.
Is the Plovdiv biology exam just multiple choice?
No. Biology and Chemistry tests, online, on one day, in English. Biology comes first, then Chemistry: 45 minutes each, 90 minutes in total. Biology has six task types, and only the first is multiple choice. The others are true statements, matching, labelling a diagram, a comparison table and fixing wrong words in a text. Chemistry has 30 questions with four options and one correct answer. Each test gets a mark from 2.00 to 6.00, and 3.00 is the pass mark. Without an accepted English certificate, you also take a 45-minute English test worth 40 points. You may not use paper, a pen, a calculator or a periodic table. Your camera and microphone stay on, and the whole session is recorded. A lost connection cancels the exam, and the fee is not refunded.
Our practice is multiple choice only, so it does not simulate the other biology task types. Practise them with Plovdiv's free sample test and the drills in our past papers guide.
Are Plovdiv's free samples enough, or do I need more?
Use them first: they are free and official. Plovdiv's are on its admission page. Biology has 51 official topics. Topics 1 to 33 are human anatomy and physiology, system by system. Topics 34 to 51 are cell and molecular biology. Chemistry has 18 topics: general chemistry 1 to 7, inorganic 8 to 10 and organic 11 to 18. The biology programme recommends one book, the Bulgarian 9th-grade textbook 'Biology and Health Education', in two parts. It names no English-language book. The university also publishes sample tests and a pool of past exam questions.
Learn the topic behind each answer, not the answer letter. Our topic checklist helps.
Do I need an English certificate?
The two official documents disagree. The admission guide asks for English at B1 level. The university's FAQ asks for a certificate at B2 level or higher, if English is not an official language in your country. Ask the university which applies to you. With an accepted certificate, you skip the English test. Without one, you take the university's English Diagnostic Test online, on the same day as Biology and Chemistry. Its mark, up to 6.00, counts once in your score. Our practice does not cover English. Our live course goes through it.
What grades do I need? Do A-levels or the IB count?
Your school diploma must show Biology and Chemistry, with an average of at least 62% of the top mark in your country. Elective Biology and Chemistry marks do not count, and the guide does not say what elective means. You need to show your English, with a certificate or with the university's own English test. See the English requirement for the level. You need a NACID certificate: NACID is the Bulgarian centre that recognises school education from abroad. Your documents need an apostille, or full legalisation if your country is outside the Hague Convention, and a Bulgarian translation. There is no age limit. You may apply to several programmes, but you can enrol in only one. You may sit several exam dates in a year. From outside the EU and EEA (European Economic Area)? You also need approval from Bulgaria's Ministry of Education, then a type D study visa.
The guide does not mention A-levels or the IB. Ask Plovdiv: question 1 of the email.
You apply to Plovdiv yourself: we are not an agent, and we do not handle documents or visas.
Is the money paid on admission refundable?
EUR 300 per exam date: EUR 30 for data processing and EUR 270 for the tests.
I am from the UK. Do I count as EU or non-EU?
Most likely non-EU. The UK is not in the EU or the EEA (the EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway).
- Plovdiv has extra steps for applicants from outside the EU and the EEA: see who can apply in the Plovdiv guide.
- Sofia sets its dates by group. Not published yet. Last year (2026): One exam date per group: 3 September 2026 for EU and EEA (European Economic Area) applicants, 9 September 2026 for non-EU applicants. Public Health: 17 to 18 September 2026.
Confirm your group with each university. Applying from the UK has the details.
Will the degree count in my country?
Plovdiv: The university's own FAQ says: since 2007, its diploma is recognised in all EU and EEA (European Economic Area) countries. That is the university's own claim. For Medical University Sofia, ask the university.
Outside the EU and the EEA, check with your own medical regulator before you apply. UK readers: see the General Medical Council's guide to degrees from abroad.
What should I ask Plovdiv before I apply?
Plovdiv's guide leaves a few things open. Ask them all in one email to entry_tests@mu-plovdiv.bg: write this email now. It opens ready to send.
- I took biology and chemistry as A-levels (or in the IB). Do they count, or are they elective? How does the grade rule apply to my grades?
- If I take the exam more than once, which result counts in the ranking?
- I have an English certificate. Do I need level B1 or B2? Which English mark goes into my score?
- Can I take the exam before my school results are out, and send my diploma later?
- If I am ranked early in the year, can I enrol before I have my diploma?
- Can first-time applicants book the September re-sit date?
