Plovdiv and Sofia Exam Dates

In short. Neither school has published its 2027 dates yet.
- Plovdiv: five exam dates in 2026, from 15 April to 18 August, and a re-sit date on 4 September. Expect monthly dates from April again in 2027.
- Sofia: its page listed one exam date per group for 2026, 3 September for EU and EEA applicants and 9 September for non-EU applicants. Expect one date per group in September 2027.

These are the dates for the medicine, dentistry and pharmacy programmes taught in English. Medical University Sofia is not Sofia University. This page covers Sofia and Plovdiv only: our guides to Pleven and Varna are not ready yet.
When are the 2027 exams?
Not published yet, at either school. Here is what the last cycles point to.
Plovdiv. In 2025 and 2026, Plovdiv held an exam date about once a month from April into the summer. A re-sit date followed: 26 August in 2025, 4 September in 2026. Registration closed about 7 days before each date. So the 2027 dates are expected to follow the same shape. That means monthly dates from April to August, plus a re-sit in late August or early September. Online registration opened on 4 March 2025 and on 2 March 2026, so it is expected to open in early March 2027.
Sofia. In 2024, 2025 and 2026, Sofia's page listed one exam date per group, in September. EU and EEA applicants came first, and non-EU applicants a few days later. So expect one date per group in September 2027. Documents opened in the last week of July each year, so expect that again in late July 2027. The closing date moved: 10 September in 2024 and 2025, but 31 August in 2026. So we do not predict it.

The two calendars are opposite. Plovdiv spreads its exam over spring and summer. Sofia holds it once, in September.
Plovdiv Medical University exam dates (2026)
Plovdiv's tests are online, and biology and chemistry are sat on the same day. Each date is paid for separately.

Registration closed 7 days before each of the five main dates, and 5 days before the re-sit. Plovdiv says it may add exam dates. In 2025 it did: an extra date on 25 August, for EU citizens only.
Documents: from 2 March to 11 September 2026. In 2026 you could sit the exam, be ranked and enrol before your diploma arrived. The documents were due by 11 September. From outside the EU and EEA, you also need them for the ministry approval and the visa, so do not leave them late.
The 2026 rankings
After the spring dates, Plovdiv published a ranking each month. Two more followed in September. Each one had a short window to enrol:

Registration opened on 4 March 2025, and documents were accepted until 11 September 2025. The 25 August date was for EU citizens only.
The September re-sit rule at Plovdiv
Plovdiv lets you sit more than one date in a year. The last date is a re-sit date, and it has its own rules:
- It costs more. In 2026, each normal date cost €300 and the 4 September re-sit date cost €400.
- In 2025, it was only for earlier sitters. The 26 August 2025 re-sit was open only to applicants who had sat a date from April to July 2025.
- In 2026, the guide does not say. It does not say if first-time applicants may book the re-sit date. Ask Plovdiv before you plan around it.
- Which result counts is not stated. If you sit twice, the guide does not say which score goes into the ranking.

For parents: each Plovdiv date is paid for separately. A lost connection on exam day cancels that exam, and the fee is not refunded. Plovdiv asks for a computer with a camera, a microphone and headphones, and at least 5 Mbps up and down.
Sofia Medical University entrance exam dates
Sofia's exam is online too. For 2026, its page listed one date per group, and it states no separate rule on attempts.

Public Health had its own dates: documents until 11 September, the exam on 17 and 18 September, and results due on 22 September 2026. Transfer students had a deadline of 20 August 2026. The enrolment deadline is on Sofia's Bulgarian page. Its English page said "to be specified".

The academic year started on 21 October 2024 and 20 October 2025. It is set to start on 19 October 2026.
Medical University of Sofia application deadline
In 2026, the deadline was 31 August. That was the last day to hand in your documents. You hand them in yourself, or through someone you authorise. That person needs a legalised power of attorney, translated into Bulgarian. Sofia does not accept documents by post, fax or email.
That deadline came 3 days before the first exam date. In 2024 and 2025 it was 10 September. The 2027 deadline is not published, so do not assume either date.
From outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland? You also need a type D visa. The non-EU exam date in 2026 was 9 September.
What the two calendars mean for your plan
- Number of tries. Plovdiv offered five dates and a re-sit date in 2026, each paid for. Sofia listed one date per group and states no retake rule, so plan for one try.
- Cost per try (2026/27). Plovdiv: €300 a date, €400 for the re-sit date. Sofia: €55 to hand in documents and €210 for the exam.
- Still at school? In 2026, Plovdiv let you sit, be ranked and enrol before your diploma arrived, with documents by 11 September. Sofia wanted your documents in person by 31 August, before its exam.
- Applying to both? In 2026, Plovdiv's last date (4 September) fell one day after Sofia's EU and EEA date (3 September). Check both 2027 calendars side by side once they are out.
Every 2026 date above is from the universities' own pages and documents. Some websites still show other dates for 2026, or dates from older years. Sofia's exams on 27 and 28 June 2026 were for its course taught in Bulgarian, not the English programmes. Always check the university's own page.
