Plovdiv Exam: How the Score Works

Drawing of the Plovdiv score: 18 points from biology, 18 from chemistry and 6 from English, 42 in total

In short. Your Plovdiv score counts biology and chemistry three times, and English once. The top score is 42.

  • You need at least 3.00 in each test, or you cannot be ranked.
  • Plovdiv's guide gives no cut-off for the English programme.
  • It does not publish how raw points become a mark either. These are the 2026/27 rules.

How the score works

Each test gets a mark from 2.00 to 6.00. Your score adds them up like this:

  • your biology mark, three times: up to 18 points
  • your chemistry mark, three times: up to 18 points
  • your English mark, once: up to 6 points

So the top score is 42.00. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy all use this one score.

Our worked examples of the 2026/27 score. Marks of 6, 6 and 6 make 42.00. Marks of 6, 5.50 and 6 make 40.50, and so do 5.50, 6 and 6. Marks of 6, 6 and 5 make 41.00. Marks of 5, 5 and 6 make 36.00. How chemistry points become a mark is not published. At Plovdiv, below 3.00 in any test means you cannot be ranked.

These are our examples, using the published formula. What they show:

  • Losing 0.5 in chemistry costs 1.5 points. Biology works the same way.
  • Losing 1 in English costs only 1 point.
  • A 5 in biology and a 5 in chemistry make 30 points. Add your English mark: 36.00 with a 6.

Biology and chemistry carry the weight. So spend most of your time on them.

Have an English certificate? Then you skip the English test. The guide does not say which English mark then goes into your score. Ask Plovdiv.

Medical University Sofia uses the same formula and the same top score of 42. There, failing any one part fails the whole exam.

The 3.00 rule

You need at least 3.00 in each test. A mark below 3.00 means you cannot be ranked. So does a missing mark.

A strong biology mark cannot rescue a weak chemistry mark. Each test must pass on its own.

If all three marks are exactly 3.00, your score is 21.00. That is the lowest score that can be ranked.

What is not published

How raw points become a mark. Chemistry has 30 questions, worth 1 point each. Plovdiv's example biology paper is worth 60 points. Both turn into a mark from 2.00 to 6.00. Plovdiv does not publish the table.

"I got 3 wrong in chemistry. Am I out?" That is 27 of 30 points. What 3 wrong answers can cost you is a lower chemistry mark. Each 0.1 less in chemistry costs 0.3 points. If 27 of 30 became 5.50, your score would drop by 1.5 points, as in the second example above. Only a mark below 3.00 stops you being ranked. Plovdiv does not publish how points become a mark, so nobody outside Plovdiv knows your exact mark. Ask Plovdiv (question 1 below).

A cut-off for the English programme. Plovdiv's guide gives no minimum score for it. Rankings appear on Plovdiv's website, under "Rankings". Cut-offs quoted on other websites and forums are not official. Check Plovdiv's own Rankings pages, or ask Plovdiv if past English-programme minimum scores are published. Nothing official says an April date is easier than a later one.

Why the 2026 minimum-score files do not apply

Plovdiv did publish minimum scores for its 2026 rankings. But those files are for the course taught in Bulgarian. That is a different competition.

So do not use them as a target for the English programme. A "cut-off" quoted from those files is not about your course.

How the rankings work

Plovdiv ranks everyone by score, from the highest down. You are ranked in the order of the programmes you chose. If several students tie for the last place, all of them get in.

Plovdiv's guide scheduled five rankings in 2026. Each had a short window to enrol:

Ranking, scheduledEnrolment window
24 Apr 202627 to 30 Apr
27 May 202628 May to 3 Jun
24 Jun 202625 Jun to 1 Jul
15 Sep 202616 to 18 Sep
24 Sep 202625 to 30 Sep

After a ranking, you have two choices:

  1. Enrol by the deadline. Then you leave the later rankings.
  2. File an online declaration to stay in the next ranking. This is an online form that says you want to stay in. You keep the place you won. You move only if you rank into a programme you put higher.

Plovdiv's guide does not say where you file the declaration, by when, or when you then enrol. Ask Plovdiv (question 6 below). If you do neither, you lose your place. Not admitted from April to June? You can join the September rankings after an online declaration.

Rankings appear on Plovdiv's website, under "Rankings" in the admission campaign menu.

For parents: on admission you pay €2,000 (2026/27 guide). It counts toward first-semester tuition. It is not refunded if your child quits.

What a re-sit costs

You can sit more than one exam date in a year. Each one is paid separately (2026 fees):

  • Each exam date: €300. That is €30 for data processing and €270 for the tests.
  • The 4 September re-sit date: €400.
  • Refunds (2026/27 guide): cancel during the registration period, and the €270 can be refunded. The €30 is never refunded. Late requests are not considered.
  • Internet drops on exam day? The exam is cancelled, and the fee is not refunded.

The guide does not say which result counts if you sit twice. It does not say if first-time applicants can book 4 September either. Ask before you book.

6 questions to ask Plovdiv

Write to entry_tests@mu-plovdiv.bg and ask:

  1. How do my test points become a mark from 2.00 to 6.00?
  2. If I sit more than once, which result counts in the ranking?
  3. I have an English certificate. Which English mark goes into my score?
  4. Can first-time applicants book the 4 September re-sit date?
  5. Do you publish past minimum scores for the English programme?
  6. Where and by when do I file the online declaration? If I keep my place, when do I enrol?
