Chemistry · electrolytes and pH

Our sample

What is the pH of a hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution of 0.01 mol/L?

Tap an answer to see the explanation.

Show the answer

The answer is B: 2.

  • A) Wrong. pH 1 needs 0.1 mol/L of hydrogen ions. This solution is ten times more dilute.
  • B) Right. HCl is a strong acid, so all of it splits into ions. That gives 0.01 mol/L of hydrogen ions, which is 10⁻² mol/L. So the pH is 2.
  • C) Wrong. pH 7 is neutral, like pure water at 25 °C. An acid solution has a pH below 7.
  • D) Wrong. pH 12 is a basic solution, such as 0.01 mol/L of sodium hydroxide.

Electrolytes and pH are on Plovdiv's chemistry topic list.

pH = -log[H+]. Dilute a strong acid ten times, and its pH goes up by 1. You need no calculator for this.

How to prepare while the paper is unpublished

Sofia does not publish the question types of the paper foreign students take (see the exam). So prepare for any kind of question, starting today:

  1. Revise school biology and chemistry by recall. Write each answer before you look at any options. Our Sofia guide has five recall drills.
  2. Prepare the English part. Everyone sits it, and failing it fails the exam (see the scoring).
  3. Ask Sofia about its own materials, and about the training manual in its fee list: what is in it?

Sofia

Your Sofia questions, answered

Is Medical University Sofia the same as Sofia University?

No. They are two different universities. This page covers Medical University Sofia only.

Is there a Sofia entrance exam sample PDF?

Not on its admissions page. Medicine, Dental Medicine and Pharmacy: the exam has three parts, English, Biology and Chemistry. All three are required, and failing one part fails the exam. The exam is online. The results of the written work are final and are not re-marked. For the exam paper that foreign students take, the number of questions, the time and the question types are not published. So be careful with any paper sold as "the Sofia paper". What Sofia publishes, and how to prepare.

How is it scored? What score do I need?

Biology and Chemistry count three times, English once. Each part gets a mark on the Bulgarian scale from 2 to 6. The maximum score is 42. Failing any part fails the whole exam.

Do I need IELTS?

English is a full part of the exam. It counts once in your score, and failing it fails the whole exam. The page names no certificate that lets you skip it. Our practice does not cover English. Our live course goes through the English part.

When is the exam? Can I retake it?

Not published yet. Last year (2026): One exam date per group: 3 September 2026 for EU and EEA (European Economic Area) applicants, 9 September 2026 for non-EU applicants. Public Health: 17 to 18 September 2026.

You need a legalised copy of your diploma, with a certified Bulgarian translation. You also need a NACID certificate (Bulgaria's recognition of your diploma), with your grades converted to the Bulgarian scale. There is one exam date per group each year. The page states no separate rule on attempts. Ask Sofia before you plan on a second try.

I want dentistry or pharmacy. Is it the same exam?

Medicine, Dental Medicine and Pharmacy: the exam has three parts, English, Biology and Chemistry. All three are required, and failing one part fails the exam. The exam is online. The results of the written work are final and are not re-marked. For the exam paper that foreign students take, the number of questions, the time and the question types are not published.

When are documents due?

Not published yet. Last year (2026): Documents were accepted from 27 July to 31 August 2026. Public Health: to 11 September 2026. Transfer students: by 20 August 2026. Check how to hand them in on Sofia's admissions page. You hand them in yourself: we are not an agent, and we do not handle documents or visas.

Start early: your diploma needs several official steps (see who can apply), and each one takes time. Our entry requirements guide lists the documents for each school.

I am from the UK. Do I count as EU or non-EU?

Most likely non-EU. The UK is not in the EU or the EEA (the EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway).

  • Plovdiv has extra steps for applicants from outside the EU and the EEA: see who can apply in the Plovdiv guide.
  • Sofia sets its dates by group. Not published yet. Last year (2026): One exam date per group: 3 September 2026 for EU and EEA (European Economic Area) applicants, 9 September 2026 for non-EU applicants. Public Health: 17 to 18 September 2026.

Confirm your group with each university. Applying from the UK has the details.

Will the degree count in my country?

Plovdiv: The university's own FAQ says: since 2007, its diploma is recognised in all EU and EEA (European Economic Area) countries. That is the university's own claim. For Medical University Sofia, ask the university.

Outside the EU and the EEA, check with your own medical regulator before you apply. UK readers: see the General Medical Council's guide to degrees from abroad.
